If you can see a tear, hole or damp patch in the roofing felt from inside your loft, you might wonder whether it can simply be patched from underneath. It is an understandable question. The damaged area is visible, it is accessible from inside and it can look like the felt itself is the whole problem.
In practice, though, repairing the underside of roofing felt does not necessarily deal with the reason water reached it in the first place.

On many pitched roofs, the tiles or slates form the main weatherproof covering. Beneath them is an underlay, traditionally roofing felt and on newer roofs often a breathable membrane. This secondary layer helps manage any moisture that gets beneath the outer roof covering and directs it safely towards the eaves.
If you can see damaged felt from the loft, that does not automatically mean the felt was the original cause of the leak. A slipped tile, broken slate, failed flashing or another defect above may have allowed water through first.
Working from underneath only gives access to one side of the problem. If water is still entering through the external roof covering, it may continue to soak timbers or travel behind a patch before showing up somewhere else.
There is also a difference between making something look sealed from inside and restoring the roof layers so they shed water properly from above. A permanent repair normally needs the external defect to be identified and the affected area made weatherproof in the correct order.
Felt can deteriorate with age, particularly on older roofs where it has become brittle. It may also be damaged by movement, previous work, a broken tile or something entering from above.
Sometimes the visible tear is quite small but the surrounding felt is already worn. In other cases, the underlay remains in reasonable condition and only a localised area has been affected.
The condition of the roof covering above matters just as much. Bastion Roofing’s roof repair service looks at the complete area rather than treating the felt in isolation.
No. A tear in roofing felt does not automatically mean you need a new roof. If the tiles, battens and wider roof structure are in good condition, a localised repair may be possible depending on where the damage is and how accessible it is from outside.
On the other hand, widespread brittle felt combined with worn tiles, failing battens or repeated leaks can be a sign that the roof needs more substantial work. That decision should be based on the overall condition rather than one visible hole in the loft.
If it is safe to access your loft, look for signs of staining on timbers, damp insulation, daylight through the roof covering or water marks running away from the area where the leak appeared below.
These observations can be useful when explaining the problem to a roofer, but avoid pulling insulation apart unnecessarily or climbing around areas that are not properly boarded. Do not attempt to reach the underside of the roof if doing so would put you at risk.
Flat roofing systems work differently from the felt or membrane beneath a tiled pitched roof. If the waterproof surface of a flat roof has split, cracked or failed at a joint, the repair needs to suit that particular covering.
Bastion Roofing carries out flat roof repairs and replacement work across Huddersfield and West Yorkshire, including assessment of leaking or deteriorating coverings.
If water is entering during bad weather, the immediate job is to protect the room below and keep the property safe. Buckets, protective sheets and moving possessions away from the affected area can limit damage indoors.
Trying to glue or tape wet roofing felt from the loft is unlikely to give you a reliable long-term repair. The external entry point still needs attention.
The useful question is not simply whether the felt can be patched. It is why the felt became damaged or wet, whether the roof covering above is still doing its job and whether the problem is localised.
If you have spotted torn felt, damp timbers or signs of a roof leak in your loft, contact Bastion Roofing. Jim can inspect the roof and advise whether a repair is practical or whether more extensive work is genuinely needed.
