Leaking gutters are easy to ignore when the problem only shows itself during heavy rain. A drip from a joint or a section that overflows can seem fairly minor, but guttering has an important job: collecting rainwater from the roof and carrying it away from the walls of the property.
When that stops happening properly, repeated wetting can contribute to staining, deterioration and damp-related problems around the building.
If water escapes from the gutter rather than reaching the downpipe, it may run directly down brickwork, render or stone. During prolonged wet weather, the same section of wall can be soaked again and again.
This does not mean every damp patch is caused by guttering. Damp can have several causes. However, if the problem appears on an external wall directly beneath a leaking joint or overflowing gutter, the drainage above is an obvious place to investigate.
Dark marks, green growth or streaking on an outside wall can indicate that water has regularly been running over the same area. You may also see staining around brackets or below gutter joints.
Inside the property, damp may appear near the top of an external wall or around the edge of a ceiling, depending on where water is travelling. It is important not to assume the gutter is responsible without checking the roof and surrounding details as well.
One common cause is a failed joint between gutter sections. Seals can deteriorate or movement can allow the joint to open slightly. Cracked guttering, loose brackets and sections that have dropped out of alignment can also cause leaks.
In other cases, the gutter itself is sound but cannot drain properly because leaves, moss or debris are restricting the flow of water. During heavy rain, water then rises and spills over the edge.
Guttering needs the correct fall so water moves towards the outlet and downpipe. If brackets become loose or damaged, a section can sag and create a low point where water sits.
That extra weight can make the problem worse over time and may put more strain on joints and fixings. A gutter that looks uneven from ground level is worth checking even if it has not started leaking noticeably yet.
No. The problem may simply be a blockage, failed joint or loose section that can be repaired. If the guttering is cracked in several places, badly distorted or generally deteriorated, replacing affected sections may make more sense.
Bastion Roofing provides roofline repairs across Huddersfield and West Yorkshire, including assessment of problems around roof edges and rainwater drainage.
A gutter can overflow even when there is nothing obvious sitting in the channel. A blocked or restricted downpipe can stop water leaving quickly enough, causing it to back up during rain.
Look for water spilling close to the outlet, loose downpipe joints or signs that water is escaping down the wall rather than being carried towards the drain.
Guttering and the roof edge work together. If water cannot drain properly, it can leave fascia boards and roofline details exposed to repeated moisture. The source of a leak around the eaves may therefore involve more than one component.
If there are also damaged tiles, roof-edge faults or signs of water getting into the roof itself, our roof repair service can look at the wider problem rather than treating the gutter in isolation.
Heavy rain is when guttering has to cope with the greatest volume of water, so it is often when an underlying fault becomes obvious. If a joint drips every time it rains heavily or the same section repeatedly overflows, it is worth dealing with before water continues to soak the wall below.
A straightforward repair may be all that is required, particularly when the problem is caught before surrounding materials are affected.
If you have leaking, sagging or overflowing gutters, take a look from ground level during or shortly after rain if it is safe to do so. Note where the water is escaping and whether the issue seems to be around a joint, outlet or longer section.
