Halifax Chimney Repair FAQs
Find answers to some of the most common questions we’re asked about chimney repairs, leaks, repointing, leadwork and damaged chimney stacks.
Rain can get in through failed lead flashing, cracked mortar joints, damaged masonry or problems around the top of the chimney. Because water can travel before it becomes visible indoors, the source of the leak is not always directly above the damp patch.
Yes, if the stack is structurally sound. Repointing removes deteriorated mortar and replaces it, helping to improve weather resistance and keep the masonry secure without rebuilding the chimney unnecessarily.
Typical signs include damp appearing near the chimney breast, staining in the loft, visible gaps where the lead meets the masonry or sections of flashing that have lifted or split. An inspection can confirm whether the leadwork is the cause.
Yes. Moisture can get into small cracks and mortar joints, then expand when it freezes. Repeated freeze and thaw cycles can gradually worsen cracks, loosen mortar and damage exposed masonry.
A partial rebuild may be needed when the upper section of the stack is badly weathered, loose or unstable but the lower structure is still sound. The damaged section can then be rebuilt without removing the whole chimney.
It can if the problem is left for long enough. Water entering around the chimney can reach the roof structure and lead to damp timber, staining and, in more serious cases, decay.
Yes. Chimney repairs can be carried out on terraced, semi-detached and detached properties, subject to safe access and the condition of the stack. Older terraced properties often need attention to pointing, flashing and weathered masonry.
