Protecting Chimneys From Holmfirth Weather
Chimneys take the full force of wind, rain and frost, and over time that exposure can weaken pointing, crack masonry and cause lead flashing to fail. Once water starts finding its way into those weak points, it can affect both the chimney and the roof around it.
For properties in Holmfirth and the Holme Valley, Bastion Roofing can inspect worn or leaking chimney stacks and carry out the necessary repairs. That can include repointing joints, repairing leadwork, replacing damaged sections and dealing with issues around pots or flaunching.
The focus is always on making the chimney safe and watertight again, while keeping the work proportionate to the actual condition of the stack.
Chimney Repair Questions In Holmfirth
Find answers to some of the most common questions we’re asked about chimney repairs, leaks, repointing, leadwork and damaged chimney stacks.
Mortar can gradually break down through age, rain, frost and repeated changes in temperature. Once joints start to open up, water can get deeper into the stack and speed up the deterioration.
Often, yes. If the problem is caused by failed pointing, damaged flashing or cracked masonry, the repair is usually carried out externally. The exact fix depends on where the water is getting in.
Flaunching is the mortar around the base of the chimney pots. It helps secure the pots and direct rainwater away. If it cracks or breaks up, water can get into the top of the stack and cause further damage.
Warning signs can include visible leaning, widening cracks, loose masonry or movement around the upper part of the stack. Any concerns about stability should be checked rather than left to worsen.
Yes. Older properties often need repairs that take the existing stonework and mortar into account. Jim can assess the condition of the chimney and recommend a repair that suits the structure rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
They can if the damp is being caused by water entering through the chimney or surrounding roof. The source needs to be identified first, as internal damp can sometimes have more than one cause.
That depends on the condition of the stack and whether it still serves a purpose. If the chimney is sound, repairing it may be the simplest option. If it is badly deteriorated and no longer needed, removal may be worth considering.
